Deepstacks, turbos and bounties: UK tournament formats compared

Understand the key differences between deepstack, turbo, bounty, and re-entry poker tournaments in the UK. Pick the right format for your game.

UK poker rooms run a variety of tournament formats. Each offers a different experience. Knowing the key differences helps you pick the right game for your style and how much time you have. From long, strategic battles to fast-paced sprints, there's a format for everyone.

Deepstack Tournaments

Deepstack tournaments give players a large starting chip count. Blinds increase slowly. This allows for more post-flop play and fewer all-in pre-flop decisions early on. Patience pays off here. You can wait for strong hands or good spots without being forced to push chips with marginal holdings. It's a format suited to players who enjoy tactical play and are happy to settle in for a longer session. Variance tends to be lower as there's more room to recover from bad beats.

Turbo and Hyper-Turbo

At the other end of the spectrum are turbo and hyper-turbo tournaments. These are designed for speed. Blinds go up much faster, sometimes every 10 or 15 minutes. Starting stacks might be smaller too. The pace quickly forces players into action, leading to more all-ins and eliminations. They finish quicker than deepstacks. If you have less time or prefer a high-octane, aggressive game, turbos can be a good fit. Expect higher variance; luck plays a bigger part when you have fewer decisions to make.

Bounty Tournaments

Bounty tournaments add an extra layer of strategy. A portion of each player's buy-in goes into a 'bounty' prize. When you knock someone out, you win their bounty. This prize is separate from the main prize pool. Progressive bounties (PKO) are common. Here, you win half of a player's bounty when you eliminate them, and the other half is added to your own bounty. This makes you a more attractive target. Bounty events encourage aggression and can lead to some interesting dynamics, as players might chase bounties even with weaker hands. It’s a good format if you like to play aggressively and enjoy the thrill of knocking players out.

Re-entry and Add-on Events

Many tournaments allow re-entries or add-ons. A re-entry event lets you buy back into the tournament after you've been eliminated, usually for a set period. You simply get a new starting stack. This can mean bigger prize pools and more chances to win. Some events allow unlimited re-entries, others just one or two. Add-on tournaments allow players to buy extra chips at a specific point in the tournament, regardless of their current stack size. This can be a strategic decision to boost your chances. Both formats can lead to larger fields and prize pools, but also mean you might spend more than the initial buy-in.

Each tournament format offers a distinct challenge and experience. Try a few to see what suits your game and schedule best. Whether you prefer the slow burn of a deepstack or the rapid-fire action of a turbo, there’s plenty to choose from across UK card rooms. Common questions

What's the main difference between deepstack and turbo tournaments?
Deepstacks feature larger starting chip counts and slower blind increases, allowing for more strategic play over a longer duration. Turbos have faster blind increases and often smaller starting stacks, leading to quicker eliminations and a more aggressive, higher-variance game.
How do bounty tournaments work?
In a bounty tournament, part of your buy-in contributes to a bounty prize on your head. When you eliminate another player, you win their bounty. In progressive bounty (PKO) formats, you win half of their bounty, and the other half is added to your own bounty, making you a more valuable target.
